Scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) conducted a unique experiment in Switzerland to study the magnetic properties of protons and antiprotons. And they found out that their potentials are absolutely identical, they only have different modality (plus and minus). But if so, then any "real" particles, including ourselves, should not exist.
According to Cosmos magazine, no one has yet been able to explain this phenomenon.
The nature of matter is one of the most amazing puzzles that the leading scientists and physical laboratories of the world are struggling with. Why didn’t matter and antimatter annihilate each other at the beginning of time?
The only reasonable explanation is the difference in their potentials. But so far everything says that they are equal.
Scientists managed to measure the magnetic properties of a proton several years ago. But antimatter could not be caught and accurately measured, due to imperfections in laboratory "traps". At the slightest error in the strength of the containment fields, the antiparticle annihilated.
Using a combination of two traps, magnetic and electric, the team of researchers made the most advanced antimatter chamber, which managed to hold antiprotons for 405 days. During this time, they changed the “magnetic moment” of the antiparticle with unique accuracy. The obtained indicator of minus 2.7928473441 μN (μN is a constant called a nuclear magneton) turned out to be absolutely identical to the proton values. Only with the opposite sign.
“This result is the culmination of many years of continuous research and development and the successful completion of one of the most complex measurements ever carried out on a Penning trap,” said researcher Stefan Ulmer.
Scientists cannot yet explain the results. The potential difference should be, they are sure. Perhaps it manifests itself in other categories.
The greatest game of mankind with the universe continues. The results of the next hotly anticipated experiment, which also recently ended at CERN, should be published very soon. A team of scientists on the ALPHA team measured the properties of gravity in antimatter.
Relatively speaking, they have to answer the question whether in this case gravity will differ in strength from "antigravity."
If they are equal, then the law of attraction will also have to be called into question.
