In the last two decades, the role and relevance of design and innovation in society has become ever more apparent. Practitioners, scholars and educators in these fields have found that traditional approaches are no longer sufficient for enabling proper understanding and analysis. For instance, business organizations appeal to this raised awareness to make their innovations more efficient while local authorities leverage innovative solutions with respect to economic development and social welfare. In sum, innovation reigns in the headlines; its rewards are paramount, its costs fall squarely on the shoulders of all citizens receiving tributes, incentives and ambages in return. Yet innovation still modestly begs for a philosophical/critical mirror, even if current casual conversations are so typically along the lines of someone simply uttering an adolescent’s incantation: 'I have innovated.'
